Poker Hand Rankings Philippines: Texas Hold'em Guide

Last checked: 20 September 2026. Poker hand rankings decide which five-card hand wins at a showdown. In Texas Hold'em, each player receives two private cards and shares five community cards, but the result is still based on the best five-card combination available.

This guide explains the standard high-hand order, common tie-breakers and the flow of a Texas Hold'em hand for Philippine players. Poker hand rankings from strongest to weakest

The table below follows the standard high-poker ranking used for Texas Hold'em. A royal flush is the highest possible straight flush rather than a separate mathematical category, but it is commonly shown as its own named hand.

PokerStars Learn's official beginner guide uses this order for standard high-hand poker. Some variants use different rules—for example, lowball games reward low hands—so never assume this chart applies to every game carrying the word “poker.”

How Texas Hold'em builds a five-card hand

Texas Hold'em gives each player two hole cards that are private. The table then receives five community cards: three on the flop, one on the turn and one on the river. A player makes the best possible five-card hand from the seven available cards.

You may use both hole cards, one hole card or neither hole card. If the five community cards already form the strongest possible combination, the board plays. Players who remain at showdown and cannot improve on that board have the same hand and normally split the eligible pot.

This is different from Omaha, where the exact card-use rule is different. Check the game name and rules panel before entering. A familiar-looking interface does not make Hold'em and Omaha interchangeable.

Texas Hold'em rounds: preflop to river

1. Blinds and deal: the small blind and big blind are posted, then each player receives two hole cards.
2. Preflop: the first betting round takes place before any community cards appear.
3. Flop: three community cards are dealt, followed by another betting round.
4. Turn: a fourth community card is dealt, followed by betting.
5. River: the fifth and final community card is dealt, followed by the last betting round.
6. Showdown: if two or more players remain, the strongest eligible five-card hand wins the pot or the pot is split between tied hands.

How poker tie-breakers work

Compare hands by category first. A flush beats a straight, and a straight beats three of a kind. When two hands share the same category, compare the part that forms the hand and then any remaining kickers as needed:

• Straight or straight flush: the highest card in the sequence decides the winner. A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest standard straight; the ace acts low in that specific sequence.
• Four of a kind: compare the four matching cards, then the kicker if the four are on the board.
• Full house: compare the three-of-a-kind rank first, then the pair.
• Flush or high card: compare the highest card, then the next highest until the tie is broken.
• Three of a kind or one pair: compare the matching rank first, then kickers in descending order.
• Two pair: compare the higher pair, then the lower pair, then the kicker.

Suits are not used to break a standard Texas Hold'em showdown tie. If both players' best five cards are identical, the pot is divided according to the table's split-pot procedure. Small denomination or odd chips can follow house or tournament rules, so the displayed rules still matter.

Examples that often confuse beginners

Example 1: the board plays. The board is A♠ K♦ Q♣ J♥ 10♠. Every remaining player has an ace-high straight using the board. A pocket pair does not improve it, so the eligible players tie.

Example 2: one-card flush. The board has four hearts and you hold A♥ plus an unrelated card. Your ace of hearts can combine with the four hearts on the board to make an ace-high flush. You do not need two suited hole cards.

Example 3: only five cards count. You hold A♣ K♣ on a board of A♦ A♥ 9♠ 9♣ 3♦. Your best hand is aces and nines with a king kicker. The sixth and seventh available cards do not become part of a seven-card score.

Example 4: a flush does not beat a full house. The ranking category decides the result even when the flush contains an ace. A full house is above every ordinary flush and below four of a kind.

Betting actions and table stakes

Common actions are check, bet, call, raise and fold. You may check only when no wager must be matched. Calling matches the current wager; raising increases it; folding gives up the hand and any chips already committed to the pot.

“No-limit” does not mean there are no rules. It normally means a player may bet up to the chips already in front of them, subject to the minimum legal bet or raise and the table's procedures. Fixed-limit and pot-limit games calculate legal wagers differently.

Online tables can use an action timer, automatic folds, disconnection rules and preset buttons. Live rooms can apply procedures for verbal declarations, exposed cards, all-in action and missed blinds. These procedures can vary, so a specific room's posted house rules and the floor's decision govern that event.

Cash games and tournaments are not the same

In a cash game, chips generally represent money at the table and blinds usually remain at the stated level until the game changes. A player may be allowed to leave and exchange eligible chips under the room's cash-out rules.

In a tournament, the buy-in normally provides a starting stack with no direct cash value. Blinds and antes rise by level, players are eliminated when they have no chips, and prizes depend on the published structure. Re-entry, late registration, breaks, payout positions and deal-making policies can all vary.

Before paying, confirm the format, total entry cost, fees, starting stack, blind schedule, re-entry policy and payout table. Do not assume a large chip count equals the same amount of pesos.

How to check a Philippine poker room or online table

1. Identify the exact product. Confirm whether it is peer-to-peer poker, a house-banked table game, a tournament or a free-play tutorial.

Poker decisions affect when you fold, call, bet or raise, but skill does not guarantee a profitable session. Unknown cards, future community cards and opponents' choices create uncertainty. A sound decision can lose one hand, while a poor decision can win by chance.

Do not treat a short winning streak as proof that future income is predictable. Rake, fees, table selection, opponents and variance all affect results. Never borrow to enter a game or increase stakes to recover a loss.
